Kate
5 Top Things
1) Fishing: You taught me how to fish, and I ended up catching a crab
on my fishingpole! This was also the day that I had to dive into the ocean to rescue the raft 2) Liberty games: Or more like "let's have coffee and ice cream at 11 PM in Penn Station!" You made last season memorable for me, and the ladies in the section. Finally they didn't think you were made up! 3) Work: You make work more sane for me. Whether its cracking at joke, asking me to get you lemons from the concession stand, protecting me from getting hit by a drunk patron, or standing up for me...you make going to work a lot more fun. 4) Met Games and Concerts: While I haven't been to a Met game, you bought me tickets to see my Rockies in July. You came with me to see Avril Lavigne, and we got free stuff because we knew people. Now you may be coming with me to see Melissa Etheridge, even though you hate her and hit the snooze button whenever "I wanna come over" is on PLJ and she's holding her 20 second note. 5) Last May: Thank you for helping me after the accident, you are truly the greatest person I've ever met. |
Miles
Davis Miles Davis was the
first trumpet player I actually started to listen to. The first album I
listened to
was Kind of Blue and the first song I listened to was "So What" Kate (over to the left) gave me his autobiography for Christmas two years ago, during my crisis with music. His story inspired me. His struggle with drugs, and the need to move music forward, and how he wasn't scared of stepping outside of the musical box helped me appreciate my gift. My admiration for this man came full circle when I got to play "So What" during the jazz concert this semester. |

Melissa Etheridge Melissa Etheridge is the other
most important musical heroes in my life (the other
being Miles Davis!). Her music may be simple but her words are powerful. I discovered her music at a time where I was struggling with myself, and her words spoke out to me, grabbing me with every verse and chorus that I listened to. One of the first songs I learned on guitar was "Come to My Window", a song often mistaken to be about love, but was a song that was describing Melissa's rocky relationship with her ex partner. Melissa is a powerful performer, her screams are raw and passionate, she lets loose whenever she performs. She inhabits the music, which is something I always aspire to do. I have the pleasure of going to see her in concert when she comes to New York City in July. My favorite song has to be "The Different" off her Skin album. The Skin album is a special album. She locked herself into a recording studio after her break up and wrote the entire thing by herself. It's almost a concept album (The Awakening surpasses this album as the best concept album by her) as she journeys through heartbreak to finding joy again. A few other songs are "Kiss Me", "Secret Agent" from Lucky, "I want to Come Over", "Unusual Kiss", "Shriner's Park", and "Your Little Secret" from Your Little Secret and "Scarecrow", "Mama I'm Strange" from Breakdown, and "Come to My Window", "I'm the Only One", "Yes I Am", and "All American Girl" from Yes I am. |
