Type I vs. Type 2

FAQ

The main treatment for Type I Diabetes is insulin therapy. Insulin can received through the body by either injections or through an insulin pump. Being that insulin is a protein, this does not allow it to be functional when ingested being that the digestive enzymes can break it down making it ineffective.

Insulin pumps have proven to be the best way to maintain control of blood sugar in Type I Diabetics. An insulin pump is a small, computerized device that mimics the way the human pancreas works by delivering small doses of short acting insulin continuously. In addition, variable amount of insulin can be delivered when a meal is eaten.

Along with insulin therapy, Type I diabetics regularly check their glucose levels throughout the day. It is common that people with T1D check their blood sugar level up to 10 times a day, depending on how they are feeling. A normal blood sugar level target range for a Type I diabetic is typically between 80-120.

Blood Sugar Monitoring

In addition to insulin therapy and glucose monitoring, Type I diabetics must learn to accurately count carbohydrate intake. This helps for better blood sugar control and more accurate insulin dosages. It is re
commended that patients follow up with their endocrinologist and diabetes team several times throughout the year.
