FAQ
- What causes diabetes?
- As of right
now, it is unclear what causes the development of type 1
diabetes. While genetics may be a major factor,
researches are unsure of the factor setting off the
immune system for it to become an auto-immune disease.
- Do I need to take insulin for the rest of
my life?
- Type 1
diabetics must take insulin for the rest of their life.
Being that there is no cure and type 1 diabetics do not
produce insulin on their own, it is necessary to take
insulin.
- If I stop eating junk food and/or sugar,
can I cure it?
- No. While
eliminating junk foods and candy from the diet will
increase blood glucose stability, insulin must always be
taken when consuming any food. Junk food and high sugar
foods do not cause type 1 diabetes in the first place.
- At what age is type 1 diabetes typically
diagnosed?
- Type 1
diabetes is typically diagnosed in adolescents and
children, between the ages of 9-16. However, some may be
diagnosed up until 40 years of age. This is why type 1
diabetes is also commonly known as "Juvenile Diabetes."
- How can I donate?

Diabetes Research Foundation, has local chapters in your
area where you can volunteer at events and support the
community. For more information, Contact JDRF.
