The
1986 Mets
From 1974-1984 the Mets have had a lot of fogetable
seasons.
In 1986 the Mets put it all together and became an instant contender.
The team had great pitching behind Cy young winner Dwight Gooden and a
great offense captained by Keith Hernandez and Hall of Fame catcher
Gary Carter.
The 1986 Mets took over first place in the NL east early in the season
and never looked back. The 86 team was known for their grity
and hard nosed play that sometimes was not appriciated
by other teams. The 1986 Mets won a franchise record 108 games and
won the East by 21 1/2 games. The World Series would not be
complete without a little drama. In game 6 of the World Series
the Mets were down to their final strike
in the bottom of the 10th inning down 2 runs. They rallied to tie the
game and
later scored the winning run on a ground ball between Boston first
baseman Bill
Buckners legs. This game is still considered to be one of the
greatest in baseball history. The Mets went on to win game 7 and
the 1986 World Series.
