WELCOME TO THE CSC170 STARTER DAY COMPUTER CHECK

This exercise ensures that you can use all the tools of the class on the PC in your Study Home. (Your Study Home can be a library PC.) Keep a written log of any task you could not accomplish along with any error messages you received, and just keep going. You will report any problems you find using the Moodle survey. This assignment looks big, but most tasks are just short tasks in which you look at something to see that it works on your PC.

Task 1: Check whether you have the course software

Windows Vista and Windows 7+ Optional: GrepWin (This is an optional tool that is better than the current Windows Vista or Windows 7 or greater tools for searching file, especially searching through file contents.)

Task 2: Run a captivate script:

Run a test captivate script by clicking here. Verify that you hear the voice and see it type "Goodbye". Hit the "x" in the upper right corner when the "movie" is done.
  • If you cannot hear the sound, try the following (one at a time):
    • turn the knob on your speaker volume on the physical speaker box.
    • make sure your speakers are plugged into the computer and into a power outlet.
    • double click the speaker icon on the start task bar (usually on the bottom right bar of your screen), and be sure the mute box is not checked and the volume is turned up.
    • please download the windows media player at http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/default.mspx
  • If you still don't hear "Goodbye" at the end, don't worry about it. Just report it in your survey.
  • Hit the "x" in the upper right corner when the "movie" is done.

Task 5: E-mail:- (only do this if you normally do not use Adelphi email )

Task 6: Discussion Boards in Moodle

Answer the question on the Social Networking Ethics Discussion in Moodle. The discussion description tells you what to post.

Task 7: Create a working folder csc170home

  • Create a folder on your C drive (or Mac Desktop) called "csc170home". (If you prefer, you can place this folder elsewhere.)

Task 8: Protect your home PC

  • Ensure you are familiar with different types of malware and what you can do to protect your PC by reading this PC health link. Also, ensure you are running some anti-virus, anti-spyware and anti-adware software. Please read and learn about malware even if you have a Mac.

Task 9: Moodle survey

Click on "Starter Survey " in the assignment section. (This is really just a survey to see where problems exist.) Take the survey. Be sure to hit submit.

Task 10: Word Photo Album

Complete the word photo album according to instructions Then upload photo album to Moodle's photo album assignment in the Word section. (Note: I would like you to get page numbering correct, but it can be very tricky. If you are unable to fix the page numbering, post it to the help board so I or another student can guide you in fixing it.)
