Harry, the protagonist of the series, becomes on other most well known wizards of his time but not by choice. Harry’s parents Lily and James Potter were killed shortly after Harry’s birth by Lord Voldemort, also known as the The Dark Lord. Harry, however, managed to survive the attack due to his mother’s sacrifice and Voldemort’s spell backfired. This ultimately lead to his downfall and provided Harry with his famous lightning bolt scar. Following these events there wasn’t a single witch or wizard who didn’t know Harry and the story of how he managed to defeat Lord Voldemort as a baby. He became known in the wizarding world as “the boy who lived”. For his protection, he is sent to live with the only family he has; his spiteful Aunt Petunia and Uncle Vernon along with their bratty son, Dudley. Harry learns he is a wizard on the day of his 11th birthday and thus embarks on his journey at Hogwarts. Throughout his many years at Hogwarts, Harry faces numerous obstacles and perilous adventures besides his two best friends Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger.

Ronald, better known as Ron Weasley, instantly bonds with Harry at the start of their Hogwarts career. He comes from a very large family of Weasleys all known for their iconic red heads of hair. Although Ron isn’t the brightest wizard and can be dim-witted and shy at times, he is always there to protect his best friends Harry and Hermione.

Hermione is an extremely smart and talented witch who befriends Harry in their first year and is sorted into Gryffindor. Hermione, who comes from a non-magical household (Muggle-born), blossoms into the brightest witches of her time. Throughout her time at Hogwarts, she is fascinated by learning the art of magic and always manages to get her best friends out of trouble with her intelligence.

Professor Dumbledore is the headmaster of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. He is extremely wise and knowledgeable. He becomes a mentor and almost a father figure to Harry throughout the series. He is said to be one of the most powerful wizards and the only person Voldemort fears.

Voldemort is a wizard who “went as bad as you can go” , in the words of Rubeus Hagrid. Once a student at Hogwarts, Voldemort fell down an extremely dark path for power. He formed a group of witches and wizards known as the Death Eaters who were set on ridding the wizarding world of all muggle borns. During this extremely dark time he and his followers killed and tortured many innocent witches and wizards, including Harry’s parents. When he was defeated by young Harry his body was destroyed and what was left of him retreated into hiding waiting for his moment to hatch his plot for revenge on Harry and destroy those in his way.

Hagrid:

Rubeus Hagrid is the keeper of keys and grounds at Hogwarts. He’s an extremely large yet kind hearted and lovable man who is there for Harry throughout the entire series. Hagrid was the one who formally delivered harry his letter to Hogwarts on his birthday. He was a student at Hogwarts once but unfortunately was kicked out for unknown reasons.

Draco Malfoy:

Draco belongs to a long line of pure bred witches and wizards from the house of Slytherin, therefore, he believes that purebreds are more superior to others. This attitude is what leads him to immediately becoming one of Harry’s biggest foes in the novels. Draco does his best to wreak havoc on Harry and his friends while in Hogwarts.
