The body consists of 206
bones (as an adult). Children are born with 300-350
bones that fuse with age. The Skeleton serves many
functions for the body. These functions include:
support, movement, protection, blood cell production,
calcium storage, and endocrine regulation. There are
many layers/ types of cells that make up a bone. The
bone structure consists of: cartilage, blood vessels,
periosteum, bone marrow, spongy bone, and compact bone.
The skeleton of a female and male have slight variations
which accommodate childbirth. The differences mainly
consist of the angel of the mandible, the pelvic shape
and the robustness of the bones. There are also similar
variations in the skeleton between different
ethnicities. Teeth are considered part of the skeleton
system even though they are not bone. Teeth are the
strongest substance in your body being made up of enamel
and dentin. There are 32 teeth in an adult, and 28 in
children. In looking at bone and teeth, there can and is
genetic variation between individuals. Each of these
aspects are also prone to diseases. Many of these
diseases come with age (i.e. arthritis and periodontal
disease) .
