Katherine Anne Austen is a
fictional character on the ABC television series Lost,
played by Evangeline Lilly.
She is the de facto female lead.
Born and
raised in Iowa, Kate is the daughter of diner worker Diane and Sam,
a
U.S. Army
Ranger and Gulf War Veteran, who taught Kate to track deer in the wild
during
her childhood.
Kate becomes a criminal when she kills her mother’s
abusive
boyfriend in order to help her mother. On
the island Kate is somewhat
of a
loose canon not always completely up to taking orders. There is a
softer side
of Kate that we see when she interacts with Jack and Sawyer. She seems
to be in
a love triangle with the two men.
