There are currently 17 living species of penguins throughout the world. Here are some of my favorites!

Adelie Penguin

Scientific Name: Pygoscelis adeliae
Size: 5.4 kg for males, 4.7 kg for females
Common Features: White ring around the eyes, medium size, breed in colonies of sizes between several dozen and several thousand!  Line their nests with rocks to keep the eggs away from melting snow.

Emperor Penguin

Scientific Name: Aptenodytes forsteri
Size: 36.7 kg for males, 28.4 kg for females
Common Features: Larger than any other living penguin (1.1 m tall!), yellow-orange fur around the head.

Fairy Penguin

Scientific Name: Eudyptula minor
Size: 1.2 kg for males, 1.0 kg for females
Common Features:The world's smallest penguin! Pale blue or dark grey-blue fur upper bodies that transition to shades of grey and white.

King Penguin

Scientific Name: Aptenodytes patagonicus
Size: 16 kg for males, 14.3 kg for females
Common Features: Second largest of the living penguins, very similar to the Emperor Penguin, but have dark orange cheeks and their back is lighter in color, closer to grey, longest breeding cycle.
