One of the best parts about
studying abroad is you get the chance to make friends with
people form all over the world who you may have never met
otherwise.
A great way to meet people when studying abroad is to enter
clubs and get involved at the school you are studying at.
ユースホステル部 (Youth Hosteling Club)
The first club that I entered at Musashi was
called the Youth Hosteling Club.
I was asked to attend a freshman welcoming party during club
recruitment at the college and decided to go to check it out.
In addition to making some great friends, I got to go on trips
to other areas of Japan outside of Tokyo with them.
This was a large club and as all of the other students in the
club were Japanese, my language skills improved greatly.
We went to Kamakura and went on an overnight trip to Yamanashi
where we had a barbeque, played card games, and explored the
area.
真心ファミリー (Visiting Cafe's Club)
The other club that I joined while in Japan was
called the magokoro family.
This was a relaxed club with only a few members and club
activities involved going to restaurants in the area around
the college.
The club met only once a month and had two bigger trips over
the year.
It was a great chance to get to know a few students personally
and find great food.
The semester culminated in a trip together to a restaurant by
the beach followed by shaved ice at that beach.
Because the other study abroad students lived
together at the dorm, I did not have as much time with them as
others.
Even so, I made some great friends with others studying abroad
at Musashi and went on various small trips including one to
Tokyo Disney.
Host Family
Lastly, my host family was the most important
relationship I formed during the study abroad and is a
relationship that has lasted to this day.
We went on vacations together, short trips around the
prefecture, and festivals during the summer months.
Living with a Japanese Family was an amazing experience and I
would encourage others who study abroad to home-stay and get a
true feel of what living in that country feels like.
