In 1995, the first widely popular 3D video
game console, the Sony Playstation, was released. This
system utilized game discs, which replaced cartridges, and the
technology of the system was much more advanced than that of
previous systems. Notable games for the system included
Final Fantasy 7, Gran Turismo, Metal Gear Solid, and Tomb Raider
2. It became the best-selling console of all time, and
kept that title until 2006. Also, the Nintendo 64,
Nintendo's first major 3D game console, was released in
1996. Unlike the Playstation, the system still used
cartridges, which gave Sony an advantage in the console
war. However, the system did sell very well, and it had
many great games, such as Super Mario 64-the first 3D Mario
game, Mario Kart 64, and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of
Time. On the subject of Nintendo, they also released the
Game Boy Color in 1998. In 1999, Sega released its last
system-the Dreamcast. The system was discontinued shortly
after, in 2001.
