Over a
decade after Alien Resurrection was made, Ridley Scott wanted
to further his original movie by creating prequels to the
Alien film to attempt to please fans about the lore of the
xenomorphs.
Prometheus (2012)
Starring Noomi Rapace and Michael Fassbender
Directed by Ridley Scott
Elizabeth Shaw and her partner attempts to ask the age old
question of "Where do we come from?" With a convincing lead,
she and a team of scientists
head to a distant planet aboard the Prometheus, an exploratory
vessel. Peter Weyland of the Weyland Corp, endorses their trip
along with providing a first generation android, David, to aid
in the exploration since he too wonders the same question.
This film introduces a black goo that seems to genetically
amplify random traits of living organisms.
Ridley Scott proposes in this film that humans are created by
Engineers, these greater beings that sacrificed themselves to
create further lifeforms on different planets.
This film had a considerable amount of CGI to create
jaw-dropping visuals and scenes that truly pushed the limits
of CGI. Ridley Scott also expertly filmed landscapes to create
further immersion and stunning eye candy.
Ridley Scott convinced many fans with this film to have faith
in the Alien Franchise again, but still left them wondering
how this all connects to the first Alien film since there was
not much shown about the xenomorph roots.
Announcing the film being part of a
trilogy, fans waited patiently for the next installment.
Alien:
Covenant (2017)
Starring Katherine Waterston and Michael Fassbender
Directed by Ridley Scott
A colonization vessel, the Covenant headed to
Origae-6 is faced with a stellar burst that costed the lives
of many colonists and desperation
for the head team of the
ship. After the disaster, the team decides to follow a
transmission from a human on a nearby planet and attempt to
colonize there. The crew is introduced to a dangerous planet
with shocking developments connecting Prometheus to this film
as well as xenomorph lore.
Ridley Scott stays true to the Alien Franchise by pushing
strongly for female leads in each of the films while also
drawing in new fans with incredible visuals in these prequels.
These two films seemed to have restored some faith in the
Alien Franchise in fans that were left hanging from Alien 3
and Alien Resurrection.
These prequels took CGI to another level which drew in many
fans that were not completely convinced with the young stages
of CGI used in Alien 3 and Alien Resurrection. The pure
immersion in these prequels place them as high standing films
in cinematography and visual effects. The story, however,
divides views on the franchise but is still compelling enough
to keep fans watching.
Alien: Covenant brings back the horror aspect that seemed to
be lost in the previous movies. Ridley Scott wanted to inflict
fear as he did with the first Alien film, which was profoundly
known for being one of the most terrifying films ever made.
