What is diabetes?

Diabetes is a chronic disease that occurs either when the pancreas does not produce enough insulin or when the body cannot effectively use the insulin that it produces.

·         Oral Glucose Tolerance Test (OGTT) Normal  less than 140 mg/dl Prediabetes  140 mg/dl to 199 mg/dl Diabetes  200 mg/dl or higher

Prevention of diabetes

1)      Choose what, how much and when to eat.

2)      Get physically active and lose weight.

                                 Body Mass Index (BMI)

                                  weight in pounds x 703

                                     Height in inches x 2

                           Underweight = less than 18.5

                           Normal Weight= 18.5 - 24.9

                           Overweight + 25.0 - 29.9

                           Obese weight = 30.0 and above

 

3)      Take prescribed medication.

4)      Monitor your blood glucose if prescribed.

5)      Go to your doctor appointments.

6)      A person with diabetes should have their A1C checked every three to six months depending on how controlled their levels are.
