"Crystal Pite was born and raised in British Columbia where she began her dance career at a young age. She studied at the Banff Centre in many summer programs and The School of Toronto Dance Theatre. In 1988 she joined Ballet BC, she would dance and perform for them for 8 years. Then, in 1990 she created her first professional choreography with the company called Between the Bliss and Me. The success of this work allowed her to create additional pieces with Ballet BC as well as Les Ballets Jazz De Montreal. Pite danced in her first William Forsythe ballet in 1990 called In the Middle, Somewhat Elevated which was her initial introduction to performing his work. Pite was drawn to the way Forsythe choreographed and his interpretation of ballet so, in 1995, she auditioned for his dance company called Ballet Frankfurt in Germany, she was then hired and left Canada for Germany in 1996. Pite performed around the world with Forsythe's company performing pieces like EIDOS : TELOSThe Loss of Small Detail, and Endless House. Pite was also excited to develop choreography with Fosythe using his improvisational technologies and in 2000 created Excerpts from a Future Work. She was involved in the creation of Forsythe's educational film "William Forsythe: Improvisation Technologies: A Tool for the Analytical Dance Eye" as one of the four featured dancers.
In 2001, Pite returned to British Columbia where she was appointed to a three-year residency with Les Ballets Jazz de MontrĂ©al to choreograph new works. After this, in 2002 Pite formed a company called Kidd Pivot based in Vancouver. This company would preform many different works from Pite herself, other choreographers, and collaborations between the guest and Pite herself. During this time she would be traveling throughout the world choreographing other works she had been hired for. She would choreograph for places such as Netherlands Danse Theatre, National Ballet of Canada, The Royal Ballet, The Paris Opera, and the list continues. In 2013, Sadler Wells, a theater in London, United Kingdom, appointed Pite as an associate artist where she would premiere many new works.
Pite has been acknowledged for her incredible work for several of her pieces. She has been awarded the Oliver Award for Outstanding Achievement in Dance, Laurence Oliver Award for Best New Dance Production in 2017
, The Georgia Straight's Critic's Choice Innovation Award in 2016, Dora Mavor Moore Award for Outstanding Production in 2016, and The Critic's Circle National Dance Award for Outstanding Performance in Modern Dance in 2016. Pite continues working with her company Kidd Pivot and commissions all around the world."
