SCULPTURE   ~   by RICHARD ALBERT GULLIKSEN

Stone Sculpture

FOX YAWNING   (red alabaster)

FOX TUMBLING  (red alabaster)
both available

Rich Gulliksen's work is in private collections locally and across the metropolitan area. For many years Rich had a studio on Warren Street in New York City, close to the World Trade Center. While he was at Visual Arts and for several years after, he worked closely with Sal Scarpitta, a well-known sculptor.

Rich's training in abstract art is reflected in his mature work as a sculptor and that is in large part what makes his animals so appealing. To my eye, his sculpture has a certain serene, solid quality (as young artist Rich loved Brancusi). None of his work is pet-like. Or fearsome. Some of his animals are literally bristling with contrast - his whiskered walruses, for example!

Painted Wood Sculpture and Drawings

One of Rich's Harbor Seals is currently on display at East End Arts Council in Riverhead. Two other seal heads are also available. The largest (gray) is about 14 in. across.  Papoose, not shown here, is about the same size. For more of his work, click on the links below.

Rich's work won several awards and it sold well while on display at the Joyce Gallery in Greenport.
Which is what artists want!   For more information, contact Prof. Hobson, PhD,

Also I have posted a short biography of the artist's life: Richard Gulliksen, remembered.

The Smithsonian interview of the sculptor Salvatore Scarpitta (1919-2007) is interesting.
In the second part, Sal talks about SVA and his relationship with Rich and his other students.

Rich's work also includes many sketches of animals.

Special thanks to Bert Nelson & Barbara Galecki and to Suzanne Salzinger and Jim Slezak for their kindness and support.

Scarpitta mentions in particular Rich's help on the sleds project--examples of which can be found at here sleds.

Rich's Ferret, Fox and Raccoon heads have been sold; also the bronzed Sitting Bear.

Reminder to art collectors and the public in general: Artists' works are protected by COPYRIGHT and by state and federal laws. Almost all art work is sold with the strong expectation that the buyer will preserve the artistic INTEGRITY of the piece (as originally conceived) and not modify it in any way.
Royalties may be due upon resale of a piece. Common courtesy demands that the buyer/owner NOTIFY the artist or his representative before the work is exhibited, sold or given away - at least for the duration of the y copyright. And, if at some later date, you are unable to keep the work and it is a one-of-a- kind piece, then you must find it a good home, or else offer the artist the RIGHT of FIRST REFUSAL before disposing of the work.
