MTH 114 Spring 2012 - Homework M
Due Wednesday 3/21/2012
Note: This additional assignment is to be done in lieu of making up the February 20th missed class. It will be counted in the Assignments portion of the semester grade.

Assigned M 3/5
  • [15 pts.] In the Peck/Devore Book, read PD Section 3.4 (pages 133-137 only) and do Exercise 3.40 on pages 140-141
  • [35 pts.] In the Carver/Nash book, read and do Session 3. (You are not required to do the Moving On exercises at the end and they should not be handed in.)
While completing the session, use a word processor to type up (in full sentences) your answers to the following questions:
    1) Page 27: Who makes greater use of cars, trucks, or vans: Men or women? Explain your reasoning.
    2) Page 29: Based on this table, would you say that men or women are more likely to commute by car, truck, or van? Explain your reasoning.
    3) Page 29: What do these numbers (row percentages) represent?
    4) Page 30: What can you say about the seat belt habits of these students?
    5) Page 31: Do (the graphs on the bottom of the page) show different information? What impressions would a viewer draw from these graphs?
    6) Page 32: How do the average GPAs of males and females compare? Explain how the graph shows this comparison.
    7) Page 32: How would you describe the shape of (the distribution on the bottom of the page)?
    8) Page 33: What does this graph show about the GPAs of these students? In what ways are they different?
    9) Page 34: Describe what you see in the scatterplot. By eye, approximate the range of weights of students who are 5'2" tall. Roughly how much more do 6'2" students weigh?
Additional Requirement: When creating the scatterplot on page 34, add your name (first and last) as a footnote. (Review Page 17 paragraph 2 if you forget how to do this.)
    10) Page 34: In what ways is this graph different from the first scatterplot? What additional information does it convey? What generalizations can you make about the heights and weights of men and women? Which points might we consider to be outliers?
For the SPSS part of HWM, either submit the actual files (SPSS output and word processing) through the HWM link in Moodle or submit a printout of these files.
