CSC 160 Fall 2007 - Homework 2
Assigned Aug 29, due MONDAY Sept 10, extended to WEDS Sept 12 at 3:59pm.

Note that Exercises 3.4.2 and 3.4.3 have been moved to HW3.

Log the time you spent on this homework by creating your own log sheet.

Read Chapter 3 of Dr. Bloch's textbook.

Do the following exercises from Dr. Bloch's textbook in the Interactions Pane of DrScheme:
  • 2.2.4: Pick two different images of similar size and shape, both reasonably small. Use image-beside to put one of the pictures beside the other.
  • 2.2.6a: Pick three different images of similar size and shape, both reasonably small. Use image-beside to put the three pictures next to each other from left to right.
  • 2.4.2: Write an expression which displays a picture beside its top-to-bottom reflection.
  • 2.4.5: Write an expression which displays four copies of a picture in a two-by-two square, each rotated differently: the top-left one should be the original picture, the top-right one should be the original picture rotated 90 degrees clockwise, the bottom-left one should be the original picture rotated 90 degrees counterclockwise, and the bottom-right one should be the original picture rotated 180 degrees. [Hints: 1) Use exercise 2.4.4 done in class as a starting point. 2) Read the hints on the top of Page 23 of Dr. Bloch's textbook.]
  • 3.1.3: Store a picture in a variable. Then define another variable named two-copies whose value is two copies of that picture, side by side, by using the previous variable. Then define a third variable named six-copies whose value is a six-pack of the picture, 2 wide by 3 high, by using two-copies.

Do the following box diagram exercises from Dr. Bloch's textbook on paper.
  • 2.7.3: Draw a box diagram to prove that (rotate-cw ball) is a legal expression.
  • 2.7.6: Start drawing a box diagram to try to prove that (rotate-cw ball    is a legal expression. Stop when you cannot draw any more boxes, and say in a full sentence why it is not a legal expression.
  • 2.7.9**: Draw a box diagram around your solution to exercise 2.4.2 to prove that it is a legal expression.

    Submitting your Assignment
Please submit the box diagram exercises on paper in class.

Please submit your Interactions Pane and Log Sheet either on paper in class or using the Digital Dropbox in the Tools menu on Blackboard. Be sure to include your first and last name at the top of both files!

The file name for the Interactions Pane needs to be "hw2[section][LastName]Int.scm" where:
  • [section] is replaced by -01 for the 9am class and -02 for the 10am class.
  • [LastName] is replaced with your last name.
  • For example, if I were submitting this assignment and I were in the 9am class, I would name the file "hw2-01WittensteinInt.scm".

Similarly, the file name for the Log Sheet needs to be "hw2[section][LastName].doc".

For full credit, you must submit all the exercises in a single Interactions Pane (either on paper or in a file through the Digital Dropbox).

Please let me know if this is not clear or if you are unsure exactly what filename to use. Part of your grade is submitting the correct 2 files on paper in class or using the correct 2 filenames when submitting with the Digital Dropbox.
