Cochlear implants transmit sound directly into the sensory system of a deaf patient, giving them the ability to hear. They are EXTREMELY unpopular in the deaf community, which has its own distinct culture and views the implants as a misguided attempt by the deaf to try to become part of the hearing culture.
I do not pretend to understand why they feel this way, and I can clearly understand why someone would want to hear, even if they are inevitably shunned by the deaf community.
Write 2-3 pages and explain why you would - or would not - choose to be fitted with a cochlear implant or have it done for your child.
