The mission of Campus Recreation is to bring people together to have fun and be active. We offer exciting activities in five categories: 1) Informal Recreation; 2) Intramural Sports; 3) Special Events; 4) Group Fitness; and 5) Sport Clubs. In addition to participating, students are encouraged to become involved as employees in a variety of rewarding positions. Thus, there is Asomething for everyone@ and many ways to get involved in our program.

          CAMPUS RECREATION                            

 

In fulfilling our mission to bring people together and have fun and be active, Adelphi Campus Recreation aspires to be the best part of your day.  We offer exciting activities in five categories: 1) Informal Recreation; 2) Intramural Sports; 3) Special Events; 4) Group Fitness; and 5) Sport Clubs. In addition to participating, students are encouraged to become involved as employees in a variety of rewarding positions.  Thus, there is Asomething for everyone@ and many ways to get involved in our program.

 

Informal (Open) Recreation

 

All indoor recreation facilities are located in Woodruff Hall. Everyone must have a valid Adelphi ID in order to use the facilities.

 

Main Gymnasium B The main gymnasium is located on the entry level of Woodruff Hall. Activities in the gym include basketball, volleyball, badminton, indoor intramurals sports, and special events. A University ID is required to use the gym after 5p.m. and on the weekends.

 

Indoor Track B The track is located on the upper level of the gym. It is a carpeted surface and measures 17 laps to the mile.

 

Pool B The Arvilla Nolan Swimming Pool is located on the first lower level at the south end of Woodruff Hall. Regular lap swimming (25 yards) prevails in this four-lane pool, which is staffed by certified lifeguards.

 

Locker Rooms B Men=s and Women=s locker rooms are located on the lower (pool) level. Locks and towels are not provided. Lockers must be registered for long term use (more than 1 day) and must be renewed annually.

 

Recreational Fitness Center - Equipped with free weights, a cybex selectorized weight circuit, and the latest in cardiovascular machines including treadmills, ellipticals, steppers, arc trainer, and bicycles. Trained student personnel who supervise the facility are available to individuals who need assistance with the equipment. The Fitness Center is located on the lower level of Woodruff Hall.

 

Equipment B The department supplies various equipment for individuals, as well as groups or clubs on campus. Racquets, nets, balls, bats, and other recreational equipment are available. Just bring your ID to the office or groups may call ahead.

Intramural Sports

 

Participation in Intramural Sports is an integral part of student life at Adelphi. Students of all abilities are welcome to participate. You can sign up a team with your friends or as a Afree agent@ and be placed on a team. Participants must be currently enrolled students or employees at Adelphi in order to be eligible. The sports traditionally offered are:

Outdoor Soccer         5 on 5 Basketball      Dodgeball

Indoor Soccer                        Racquetball

 

Special Events

 

Special Events offer a more social and fun atmosphere. These one-day activities are offered to appeal to the interests of a variety of people, whether competitive, social or both. Many are co-coordinated with other departments on campus events held in recent years have included:

The Cat Cup Challenge (Resident Hall Competition)

Greek Olympics

Poker Run

The Scavenger Hunt (A Cat Cup Event)

Self-Defense Workshop

Spike It (Outdoor Volleyball Tournament)

Student- Faculty Sports Night

Intramural Basketball All-Star Game

Weight Lifting Contest

 

Group Fitness Classes

 

Fitness classes provide the students with opportunities to enhance their cardiovascular fitness and muscular strength while having fun.  Classes offered in the recent years include:

Kickboxing

Yoga

Pilates

Abs

Boot Camp

Cardio Blast

Step Aerobics

Sport Clubs

 

Sport Clubs offer students the opportunity to pursue an activity of special interest without the rigorous demands of a varsity sport. Sport Clubs can be social, instructional, and competitive in nature. 

 

Ultimate Frisbee Club B This club offers instruction, practice and competition in the rising sport of ultimate Frisbee. Established in the Fall 2003, this club travels to other institutions and competes with other intercollegiate clubs.

 

Paintball Club B This participation and competition based club is open to students and faculty of all ability and experience levels. Established in the spring of 2005, this club travels to local paintball venues to practice, compete, and for general outings.

 

Step Team B This club was added to the roster of Sport Clubs in the spring of 2005. Already in existence for several years, the Step team offers instruction, participation, and competition in the exciting emerging art of Step dance and performance.

 

Hip-Hop Dance Club B Established in the Spring of 2005. The hip hop club offers instruction, performance opportunities and competition in the Hip-Hop style of dance for students.

 

Surf Club - (New For >06->07)

Numerous beaches within close proximity to Adelphi allow for nearly year round participation in surfing. This club welcomes new members* and will provide opportunities for (novice) instruction, mentoring, and advanced surfing experiences.

 

*Participants are required to demonstrate swimming ability.

 

New Sport Club ideas are always welcome. Contact the Campus Recreation office for information on feasibility and how to start a new sport club.

Suggestions for Faculty:

 

Please encourage your students to review the information provided in their binder,(even early in the semester would be useful). Please give class instructions on where Woodruff Hall is, to meet in the gymnasium and to be on time. Please assist the Recreational staff in guiding your students through the three segments we are doing. 1) Tour & Fitness Center Orientation, 2) Presentation of Activities and Programs offered, and 3) Q & A/Resources.
