Overenrolling in MTH or CSC courses

All classes have a maximum enrollment limit (course cap). These limits are in place to ensure that all students experience the best learning possible and that overenrollment requests are addressed in a transparent and equitable way.

In addition, these limits are imposed by New York Fire Code to ensure the safety and well-being of people utilizing the spaces.

In principle, no students will be permitted to register for a class once the maximum enrollment has been reached.

In specific circumstances, and only if safety and the educational experience is not jeopardized, individual instructors may consult with the chair of the department to overenroll a course by one or two students. The decision will be made by the instructor and cannot be appealed.

Priority Waitlist

Some courses have priority waitlists associated with them. A priority waitlist is a waitlist that is not evaluated in a "first-come-first-served" approach, but one in which the students with the greatest need is offered a spot first.

Students with a "Priority Registration" accessibility accommodation do not automatically have a higher status on the waitlist.

The priority registration accommodation means that you were given an option to register before the general population to ensure that your schedule meets your documented needs. However, once general registration opens, the information listed below applies.

Student who are on the priority waitlist for an MTH course or for a CSC course are not automatically guaranteed a spot in the course. Seats are released to students using the following algorithm:
  1. Student who need the course as part of their major requirements are considered first. The student with the most credits earned will be offered first.
  2. Students who need the course as part of the requirements of one or more minors are considered next. The student with the most credits earned will be offered first.
  3. Students who need the course as part of their general education requirements are third in line. The student with the most credits earned will be offered first.
  4. Students who would like to take the course as an elective are fourth in line. The student with the most credits earned will be offered first.
Once a seat has been offered to a student, a notice is sent to their Adelphi email address. From that moment, they will have 24 hours to register. After 24 hours, the offer is recinded and the next person in line will be offered the seat.
The chair of the department may deviate from this process if they determine that there is an extenuating circumstance that warrants it.
