Student Information

NYS Standards for Physical Education

Standard 1: Personal Health and Fitness
Students will have the necessary knowledge and skills to establish and maintain physical fitness, participate in physical activity, and maintain personal health

Standard 2: A Safe and Healthy Environment
Students will acquire the knowledge and ability necessary to create and maintain a safe and healthy environment.

Standard 3: Resource Management
Students will understand and be able to manage their personal and community resources.


NASPE Physical Education Standards

Physical activity is critical to the development and maintenance of good health. The goal of physical education is to develop physically educated individuals who have the knowledge, skills, and confidence to enjoy a lifetime of healthful physical activity.

A physically educated person:

Standard 1: Demonstrates competency in motor skills and movement patterns needed to perform a variety of physical activities.

Standard 2: Demonstrates understanding of movement concepts, principles, strategies, and tactics as they apply to the learning and performance of physical activities.

Standard 3: Participates regularly in physical activity.

Standard 4: Achieves and maintains a health-enhancing level of physical fitness.

Standard 5: Exhibits responsible personal and social behavior that respects self and others in physical activity settings.

Standard 6: Values physical activity for health, enjoyment, challenge, self-expression, and/or social interaction.


News & Current Events

New Video games Promoting Physical Activity: Video games are now being used in some physical education classes to promote fitness. Games like Dance Dance Revolution and WiiFit are unlike traditional video games that simply use a controller. These games get kids from up off the couch to play.

Mr. Gym:This website is very informative.  It gives detailed description of the games.  It was created by an elementary teacher who wanted more games and ideas for his classes.  However, most games range up until the high school level.
Smart Spot:This website provides information for students and their families to live healthy lifestyles.
Kinetic.com: Kinetic.com is a website designed for ages 9-12 that motivates kids to eat healthier and get active.
Pedago Net: This website contains games and activities that students can play daily to get active and enhance their minds.
Middle School
Group Games:This website deals with getting involved in group games. Students will learn the proper skills for their age.   The site as well is very descriptive about the kind of skills one will be learning.
Kids Fitness Central: This website contains information for students and their parents on nutrition, fitness, safety, and exercise activities.
Brain Fitness: This website gives students tips for strengthening the brain.
Kids Health: Emotions: This website gives middle school-aged students ways to deal with the numerous emotions and stresses that they may encounter.
Healthy Kids: This website details five steps for kids to live healthier lifestyles.

Personal Activity Performance:This website gives students a chance to learn how to keep track of their own activity performance as well learn different games and skills.
Teen Help: This website contains various articles on teen health issues.
Kids Sports & Fitness: This website contains articles for both high school students and their parents to learn about athletics, fitness, and nutrition. Students can even upload videos of their own sport performances.
Tone Teen: This website is a great resource for teens to use for health and fitness information.
Teen Growth: This website touches upon numerous health and fitness topics for teenagers. It gives information regarding sports training, weight management, emotions, and sexual health.

YOGA FOR LIFE




Yoga can be a very beneficial lifetime activity. It originates from India and was part of the Hindu religion. Yoga is both a physical and a mental practice. The poses performed during practiced are used to prepared the body to sit in meditation for long periods of time. There are many different types of yoga. The two most common forms of yoga are Raja Yoga and Hatha Yoga. Raja Yoga is concerned with meditation and liberating the body and mind. Hatha Yoga uses postures and poses to cleanse the body for meditation leading to liberation. Today, most yoga classes are a mixture of both Raja and Hatha yoga performing a series of flows and poses and ending with a period of relaxation known as the "savasana." Yoga poses have two names: a Sanskrit name and a English name that is normally related to nature.


The benefits of yoga are countless. The following are some of the physical benefits:
  • Decrease in blood pressure
  • Increases flexibility
  • Increase energy levels
  • Improves sleeping habits
  • Improves balance
Yoga has psychological benefits as well. 
  • Improves concentration
  • Decrease in anxiety & depression                                                                                                            
  • Memory improves
  • Mood improves
  • Overall self-wellbeing increases.
