Arguments for my position: Employers should be allowed to look at employees social media accounts

Argument #1- posting on social media is designed to share the post with others, if the employee didn’t want others to see it they shouldn’t have posted it

There has been a positive finding in the reliability of drawing conclusions of an employee or applicant through social media accounts (Thomas,Rothschild, & Donegan,2015)

Companies are arguing that it is their freedom to go onto public social media sites and monitor their employee, because public postings can be seen by anyone (Thomas, Rothschild, and Donegan 2015).

Argument #2 - the employee represents the company, employers should be able to make sure the brand is well represented

Employers are reporting that employees are bashing companies on social media, which caused boundaries to be blurred. The employer must monitor the well being of the company therefore they have to monitor postings made about the company (Suder & Siibak 2017 p.78)

Although legality is being explored it has become commonplace for employers to look at social media as part of the application process to ensure the individual portrays themselves and the company is a well respected manner (Suder & Siibak 2017)
