Bowling Places 13th at Music City Classic

Smyrna, Tenn. - The Adelphi University bowling team went 5-10 over three days of competition to finish in 13th place at the Columbia 300 Music City Invitational hosted by Vanderbilt University, dashing the Panthers' hopes of a berth to the NCAA or USBC Tournament. Adelphi, now 73-52 on the year and ranked 15th in the latest NTCA National Coaches Poll, return to action at the Northeast Conference Championship in Reading, Pa., hosted by Kutztown University on Saturday, March 24th.

The weekend started well enough as the Panthers started with a 34 pin win, 733-699, over the Lady Techsters of Louisiana Tech. Adelphi's fortunes changed when the Panthers faced the #2 Red Wolves of Arkansas State University and were soundly defeated by 155 pins, 885-730.

The slide continued as the SWAC Champions Prairie View A&M fired a six-bagger to claim a 40-pin win, 752-712. A quick bounce back saw the Panthers down the squad from University of Alabama-Birmingham by 56 pins, 666-611, but the host #4Vanderbilt University was less than hospitable in dropping Adelphi by 29 pins, 773-744.

The Corn Huskers of #3 University of Nebraska displayed their talent and claimed a 61 pin win, 808-747, en rout to winning the Classic. Day one concluded with the Panthers in 10th place in the field of 20.

Day two began on a positive note as
Samantha Morlack fired a 258 gem and was assisted by Danielle Merino (213) to spearhead a 12 stunner over the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, 939-927. Then the wheels fell off the wagon and the Panthers lost their next five matches. Stephen F. Austin took a 31 pin win, 863-832, despite a 196 pin effort by Victoria Peters. The squad from Sam Houston State University rallied for a 18 pin win, 899-881, regardless of a 217 effort by Merino.

The ladies of Alabama A&M were super-charged as captain Addy Pointer fired a 277 bombardment, capturing a 166-pin win 1020-854. The #7 Jennies of Central Missouri had some late game heroics and came from behind to stun the Panthers by 17 pins, 889-872.
Kristina Porter came off the bench in the final match of the day and responded with a 230 game andkeep the match close throughout. The Panthers could not close the deal and fell by 21 pins 875-854.

Adelphi turned things around in day three as the Panthers faced NEC rival Kutztown University in a best of seven Baker series, but the too-little-too-late results left Adelphi in 13th place at the finish. The Panthers dropped the first two games of the series and fired back to claim games three and four. Dropping game five, the Panthers responded by winning game six to force a deciding game seven. The Panthers fell by 10 pins, 211-201, handing KU the 4-3 victory. The Panthers claimed some redemition as they defeated the Terriers of St. Francis College, 4-1, and the NJCU Gothic Knights were unable to match the Panthers in the final match of the day falling 4-1.
