A few days later, Dennis and I were camped on the Mississippi. We decided to canoe down
the river and then to try and paddle back up. That was tough getting back upstream and upwind,
but not the point of the story. We came around the bend in a river, and from high up in this dead tree,
a Bald Eagle flew out of a huge nest, the size of a tree house. A few moments later, a second eagle
flew out of the nest. I didn't get a picture of the eagles, but here is the nest.
We swung down into the Mesabi Iron Range, which is now pretty much mined out, but at one time
had such a huge quantity of rich iron ore that it was one of the things that propelled the Industrial
Revolution inthis country. As it turns out, there is an iron mine in Hibbing, Minnesota,
Bob Dylan's home town. And it is true that there is not a single sign in the town memorializing the
most famous resident.
