CSC 170
Homework 1
Assigned Jan 23, due Jan 30
This may look like a lot of problems, but most of them either have no
wrong answers (like the survey) or are purely mechanical (like
downloading and installing software on your computer).
- Fill out the class survey
on the Web.
- Make an appointment by e-mail
to see Dr. Bloch in his office for 5-10 minutes.
- Start reading the Parsons & Oja book.
- On your home computer (or wherever you're likely to be doing
homework), check that you have the following software. If you don't,
I've included a download link.
- SeaMonkey (which
we'll use for building Web pages)
- An FTP client such as FileZilla,
- Either Microsoft Office (which you can buy at a student
discount) or OpenOffice
(which you can download for free)
- An image editor such as Irfanview
(for Windows) or Gimp (for Mac).
Note that Gimp relies on having X11 (an "optional feature" shipped with
the Mac operating system) installed on your Mac.
- If you haven't done so already, create an account on Piazza (which we'll be using for
on-line discussion). You should have received an e-mail with the
subject “Welcome to Piazza! You've been enrolled in CSC 170-02 as a
student.” If not, visit this sign-up
link.
- If you haven't done so already, log onto Adelphi's Moodle system and confirm
that CSC 170 shows up on your list of classes.
- In Moodle, click the “Sample file to download”
activity to download a text file to your home computer.
Open it in Word, OpenOffice, or any text editor, and follow the
instructions in it (which involve editing it). Then
upload it to Moodle by clicking the “Uploading practice”
activity, to confirm that your computer can both download from and
upload to Moodle.
