S.G.A.’s Campus Initiatives

The S.G.A. is dedicated to making Adelphi a more student-friendly, cost-effective, and educationally sound university.  As the advocate for students, the S.G.A. has an extensive agenda of issues that affect the undergraduate student community. And, we are making great progress.  Choose from the links below to see how the S.G.A. has made a difference in specific issue areas.  Click on the "Suggestions" tab to identify problem areas that you believe the S.G.A. should be tackling and to offer your own solutions.  We welcome your feedback; we are here to serve you!

Academic Issues
Education is the primary foundation of any university.  The S.G.A. is committed to working with students, faculty, and administration to improve and diversify the educational opportunities available at Adelphi. Throughout the year, S.G.A. will be working to enhance its educational mission as well by sponsoring its Black History Month and Women’s Recognition Month.  If you have any concern about your educational issues, please contact the representative of your school or college, who will assist you with your issue.

Athletics and Greek Life
S.G.A. and Adelphi Athletics have had a stronger relationship then ever in 2007-2008! S.A.A.C. and S.G.A. have worked together on several projects to benefit the student body and will continue to forge a close relationship in the upcoming semester. Our university is blessed with an extraordinarily successful and talented athletics program.  Additionally, our Greek community is one of the most involved and most cohesive student constituencies at Adelphi.  In an effort to expand the popularity of athletic and Greek events and enhance school spirit, the S.G.A. is reaching out to Athletics and Greek Life more extensively than ever before.  Click on the links below to explore some of the specific initiatives that S.G.A. is pursuing.

Commuter Issues
Commuter students comprise over 60 percent of the Adelphi population.  Therefore, the S.G.A. recognizes the importance of addressing the issues that commuters face on a daily basis. The S.G.A. has been working closely with the Division of Student Affairs to enrich commuter life at Adelphi throughout the year. If you have a concern or idea for improving the commuter student experience, please contact one of our commuter senators.  Click on the links below to explore some of the specific initiatives that S.G.A. is pursuing.

Space Issues
Space is a growing problem at Adelphi. It is an issue that students, faculty and administration are all constantly facing. S.G.A. understands that classrooms, lounges, and even field space is stretched more then ever. We are working with the University Administration to renovate current lounges, add new spaces, and form policies that are fair and productive to student’s needs and usage. Click on the links below to explore some of the specific initiatives that S.G.A. is pursuing.

Improving S.G.A.
In order to serve the students of Adelphi University, the S.G.A. must operate as effectively, consistently, and broadly.  Thus, the 2007-08 S.G.A. is dedicated to ensuring that our policies, procedures, and capabilities are as streamlined, efficient, and accessible as possible. In addition, we have launched an intensive year long publicity program that will help S.G.A. interact and form a relationship with the campus community. S.G.A. understands that we can only serve its constituents if we are actively listening.  Click on the links below to explore some of the specific initiatives that S.G.A. is pursuing.

Promoting Diversity
Jimmy Carter once said of the United States, we are a land of “Different people, different beliefs, different yearnings, different hopes, different dreams.”  Adelphi is no different, and the S.G.A. believes that our diverse backgrounds, cultures, and ideas should be respected.  At the very least, no student should be discriminated for his/her differences. S.G.A. entrusts this task to UMOJA, who works diligently to ensure that Adelphi University and S.G.A. is meeting the cultural needs of its students. S.G.A. and UMOJA is working with the Administration and student cultural organizations to ensure that Adelphi is not only safe for people of all kinds, but also that our university is an advocate for equality, multi-culturalism, and human rights around the world.

Residential Life
Every Adelphi resident deserves to live in the most comfortable environment possible—an Adelphi residence hall should be as much like home as possible.  Your student representatives are working with Office of Residential Life and Housing and the Resident Student Association (R.S.A.) to ensure that your stay at Adelphi is enjoyable and conducive to maximizing your educational growth.

If you have any specific concerns or complaints about your living conditions at Adelphi, please contact one of our residence senators.

Club Relations
Adelphi’s clubs and organizations are part of the foundation of student life and the S.G.A.’s mission.  Every year, we allocate approximately $800,000 to allow clubs and organizations the opportunities to enliven and improve campus life for all students. We pledge to make our relationship with clubs and organizations more collegial and mutually beneficial.

Please visit our link for clubs and organizations, or contact the vice president or treasurer for information regarding our policies and/or allocations process.

Administration Relations
If S.G.A. is to effectively serve the Adelphi students, it is essential that we work closely with the administration that governs and manages your campus and education.  S.G.A. holds an intimate and systematic relationship with those at the highest levels of Adelphi University, from the Board of Trustees to the president, and the provost to the deans.  Your S.G.A. representatives are meeting and working with the Administration to make your university on a monthly basis.

If you are interested in finding out more about the S.G.A.’s relations with the Administration, please contact S.G.A. President Michael Berthel.
