- Be able to update a web page with a picture
- The home page on Panther must be named index.htm or index.html
- Understand how a picture links to a page
- Understand the purpose of a File Manager: Windows Explorer
(local), FileZilla (remote)
- Definition and examples of web server
- Understand what html is
- Understand the purpose and function of a web browser: Firefox
and Internet Explorer
- Know how to FTP to panther
- Know that you should always create one folder for your web
site, and keep all files inside that folder
- Be able to tell what is wrong with a picture that does not
show. (Either the picture is not on panther or the path to the
picture is wrong.)
- Know how to create all 4 types of links: e-mail; another page
on your site; a web address; bookmark
- Know how to insert, size and place an image
- Know how to create a table and why you would use one
- Know how to set a background
- Know what alternate text for pictures is used for
- Know what a thumbnail is
- Be able to create a horizontal line (insert / horizontal line)
- Know that panther will show index.html in public_html when you
start
- Know Firefox and Internet Explorer and Google Chrome are web
browsers
- Know that a web browser can see locally (file) or remote
(http)
- know that a picture is not held inside a HTML page
- HTML Code : know that it uses matching opening and closing
tags and that the items in the head sections do not show on the
page
- CSS Code: know that it is used to it effects how your text
looks and where it stands; keeps code clean by separating style
instructions; hooks into tag names, ids and classes
Graphics:
- download and use pictures
- How to crop a picture
- What is a thumbnail and why does it use 2 different picture
files
Practical Application: (create a web site with the following): -
remember it doesn't have to be pretty for practice
- Add a link to your site titled "web study"
- Create a new webstudy page and link to it from the index
- Include a table
- Include a picture on top
- Include a picture on the background that you changed to a
smaller filesize
- Include a link to another website
- Include a link to an email address
- Include a link to the top of page
- Change the title
- Some words with different font colors and sizes
- ----> Then, call someone else off campus to ensure they can
see it well on their PC.
Powerpoint knowlege:
- How to create a powerpoint with a couple slides with title,
bullets, tables and pictures
- How to animate objects on the slide, and how to make them come
in a certain order without any clicks required
- How to create a hyperlink to a web site or to another slide
- How to change the slide master to change default fonts and the
default background picture
Information Literacy:
- There are different formats for citations
- The library has guides for both MLA and APA
- The database citations do not always give correct formats for
citations
- APA emphasizes the copyright more than MLA
- In text citations need to be clear indexes to the works cited
- Citations are required for paraphrasing and citing sources of
facts that are not common knowledge
- When the author or date is mentioned in the sentence, the
in-text citation does not require the author or date.
- Know how to cite a web site as opposed to a web page (with the
web site not having a title in quotes).
- Know how to search for the author, title, web site name,
publisher (which is the url root if you cannot find the
publisher), date.
- Know the difference between the web site date and the access
date.
- Know how to recognize :
- Currency - The timeliness of the information.
- Relevance/Coverage - The depth and importance of the
information.
- Authority - The source of the information.
- Accuracy - The reliability of the information.
- Purpose/Objectivity - The possible bias present in the
information
- If you can find only an abstract in one database, you might
find the entire article in another database
- Some databases can be searched online.
- Scholarly journal is a stronger source than a popular
periodical
